Thanks to my Aussie buddies, it was an eventful last night on Phi Phi Island. We went to Hippie Bar, which was a blast. They had a bonfire on the beach, awesome places to chill and drink a lot of beer. And they had fire dancers. Was much more fun than hanging out at the clubs. Despite the late night, my fellow Aussie buddies joined me for a final brekky and couple hours hanging out in a cove near Long Beach. From there, we said our final goodbyes, exchanged contact info, and parted ways. I still talk to people I met 10 years ago on my travels, and Australia is on my five-year plan, so these guys just may come in handy for a look-up…
I just got to Phuket Town after a two-hour ferry ride from Phi Phi’s port. I rented a room for a couple hours so I can relax and grab a much-needed shower before I hop on my flight to Bangkok. This is my only chance to get cleaned up for the next 50 hours or so. Once I get to Bangkok, I wait for five hours at the airport before catching my flight to Tokyo. After a six-hour flight, I have a 15-hour layover there — just enough time to hopefully see a couple sights and enjoy some sushi. I then head to a different airport in Tokyo and am on an 11-hour flight to LA. Another 15 hours in LA to catch up with an old family friend, and then I fly home to Minneapolis. Blech. Am thinking I’ll probably finish the third book of the Steig Larsson series with all these long layovers. I’m hoping I’ll be able to sleep a bit on the plane(s)…
So, you’ll probably hear from me two more times – one to recap Toyko, and a final one so you know I’m home. I can’t wait to see my dog. And a friend. Or two. Okay, a lot of people.
