8.12.11: One big playground. And wild monkeys!

So…yeah…Angkor Wat. Nothing special. I mean, yeah, it’s big. And beautiful. And it’s like a big giant, ancient playground where you get to climb on a bunch of stuff. But you don’t want to go there. No. It’s not for you.

It is, however, PERFECT FOR ME! Neither Nate nor I have smiled as much on this trip as we did today. Angkor Wat should be called Angkor WOW. I can’t even do it any justice with any descriptions. It is just that amazing. I took a ton of pictures. Those still don’t do it as much justice, but it’s better than I can articulate right now. We left our hotel around 7:00 a.m. and got back just after 6:30 p.m. A guy drove us around to all the sights via tuk tuk (I seriously love these things). Was only $13 for the entire day. We spent considerable time at most of the sites — walking around and climbing, climbing, and CLIMBING. Our driver had cold water waiting for us every time we got back from a site. Overall, he was so damn wonderful, so we bought him lunch, which he INHALED. We tried to stay for the sunset, but our feet hurt, we were hungry, we sweat entirely too much, we had taken in far too much sun, and we just couldn’t take the heat anymore. We were in need for food. And a lot of air conditioning.

Angkor Wat is definitely in a jungle. We saw wild monkeys, among so many other amazing things. When we saw the monkeys, we were shocked — we’d never seen monkeys outside of a zoo before. There were a good 40 monkeys running all over the place, content as ever.

Once we got back to our hotel, we took showers and headed out to Pub Street in the Old Market and ate a really good dinner and drank a lot of beer. (How do you not over-consume when taps are 50 cents???)

I seriously can’t stop giggling. It was just that awesome of a day. We leave tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. to catch a bus back to Phnom Penh to catch our flight back to Bangkok. We then head immediately to Chiang Mai. Once there, we get to hang out with elephants. And shop.

Was a long day, but a wonderful one. I’m off to get a massage and then am heading to bed. Talk about a perfect ending to a pretty fabulous day…
